Red Eyes – Should I Be Concerned?

If you’re suffering from red eyes, you could have a subconjunctival hemorrhage, as it’s one of the most common causes of red eyes. A subconjunctival hemorrhage occurs when a small blood vessel below the conjunctiva bursts and bleeds. The white areas of your eye may appear reddened as blood fills the area; however, red eyes from a hemorrhage are not painful and do not cause vision changes. Hemorrhages can be caused by vomiting, coughing, or lifting heavy objects. It can also occur after eye surgery or trauma.

Although it can look scary, subconjunctival hemorrhages are actually quite harmless. It is similar to a bruise on your skin, where the blood gets trapped beneath the clear conjunctival tissue and causes a mark. The blood will naturally absorb within a few weeks, so no treatment is required.
