Corneal Transplants

Corneal Transplants

There are two types of corneal issues that are treated with corneal transplants. The first issue is called Keratoconus, which is a disease that causes corneal thinning. The second condition that is treated with corneal transplants is when there is excessive scarring caused by chemical burns or blunt trauma to the cornea.

During the corneal transplant, the corneal button, a central area of the cornea, is removed during surgery and replaced by tissue from another person’s eye. The new corneal tissue is then sutured in place. Although vision may not be perfect following surgery, patients will have restored vision. For those who had corneal transplants for Keratoconus, a lens is used to further improve patients’ vision by shaping the eye’s curvature.
