Keratoconus

Keratoconus

Keratoconus, a degenerative cornea disease, causes the cornea to thin and bulge into a funnel-like shape. The altered appearance prevents light from being correctly focused on the macula. The disease progresses over time, and the shape becomes more severe, leading to blurred or distorted vision. Keratoconus patients are often very nearsighted due to the irregular cornea shape. They also have high levels of astigmatism, which is impossible to correct with glasses.

Keratoconus is usually seen in both eyes. It can cause blurred vision, even when wearing contact lenses or glasses, glare at night, and light sensitivity. People affected may constantly rub their eyes or experience frequent prescription updates. This disease is usually diagnosed before patients turn 20. Since keratoconus can’t be seen by the naked eye, special testing is required to examine the shape of the cornea.

For patients suffering from keratoconus, the first treatment is to use a rigid gas permeable contact lens. This type of contact is rigid gas permeable and cannot be bent. It creates a smooth surface that allows you to see clearly. Specialty contact lenses may be required due to the cornea’s irregularity. If the disease progresses to a point where corrective lenses are no longer sufficient, a corneal transplant may be necessary.
