Macular degeneration refers to an inherited condition that causes permanent vision loss. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of permanent vision impairment in the United States for those over 65.

The macula, a small portion of the retina at the back of your eye, is responsible for our clear vision. Although macular degeneration may cause us to lose our central vision, we can still maintain our peripheral vision and avoid total vision loss.

If you believe you are experiencing macular degeneration in Baton Rouge, or have sudden or gradual vision loss problems, call the retina specialists at Retina & Vitreous of Louisiana. The Types of Macular Degeneration We Can Treat

Atrophic (Dry) Macular Degeneration

All macular degeneration begins as dry macular degeneration. Dry macular degeneration refers to a gradual deterioration in the macula that occurs over many years. Dry macular degeneration is characterized by:

Drusen
Retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) changes
RPE Atrophy

These clinical signs can classify dry macular degeneration into severe, intermediate, and mild categories. About 10% of people with dry macular degeneration will eventually progress to wet macular degeneration.

Wet (Neovascular) Macular Degeneration

Wet macular degeneration is when new blood vessels grow into the retina. These blood vessels are irregular and leaky. They often leak serum and blood into and underneath the retina. The extra fluid causes the retina to swell and results in vision problems.

Treatments for Macular Degeneration in Baton Rouge

Before we can treat macular degeneration in Baton Rouge, our retina specialists will conduct a couple of tests. We use two types of photography to show the retina’s abnormal blood vessels and swelling. Intravenous fluorescein angiography (IVFA) uses fluorescein (vegetable) dye to highlight and display abnormal blood vessels. Ocular coherence tomography (OCT) shows the amount of swelling, or edema, in the retina.
